Chaplaincy

Why CTU is the Premier Choice for Chaplaincy Preparation

At Catholic Theological Union (CTU), chaplaincy preparation goes beyond academics; it’s a transformative journey that equips students with the skills, empathy, and interfaith understanding necessary for modern-day ministry. Any theological degree from CTU provides a solid foundation to pursue chaplaincy through a comprehensive, customizable curriculum. CTU’s program is designed to meet the unique needs of students entering the field, incorporating advanced theological and pastoral care coursework, interreligious dialogue, and ethics training to ensure graduates are fully prepared for chaplaincy certification and real-world ministry. In addition, our Field Education and Career Services office will accompany students through the steps to become Board Certified in Chaplaincy through organizations such as the Association of Professional Chaplains or the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.

Unique Curriculum Tailored to Chaplaincy Needs

One of CTU’s strengths is its flexible curriculum, allowing students to select electives that align with their unique chaplaincy goals, whether focused on hospital, hospice, or prison settings. Core courses like Dr. Robin Ryan’s God and the Ministry of Human Suffering provide invaluable insight into understanding suffering—a key theme chaplains encounter daily. Courses such as Reconciliation with Kevin Constantine and Medical Ethics offer deep theological and ethical foundations essential for chaplains navigating complex spiritual and moral questions in diverse, often high-stakes environments.
For those passionate about combining spirituality with holistic care, Dr. Vanessa White’s course on Spirituality and Health explores the interconnectedness of well-being and spirituality. CTU’s approach to chaplaincy preparation emphasizes rigorous academics and the profoundly pastoral elements of presence, counseling, and compassionate care—attributes essential to effective chaplaincy.

Intercultural and Interfaith Training

In today’s world, chaplains must be equipped to serve in intercultural and interreligious settings. CTU’s commitment to interfaith dialogue and intercultural competence stems from our Catholic – Jewish and Catholic Muslim Studies Programs that foster an environment where students can engage with diverse perspectives and learn to support individuals from various backgrounds.
Courses such as Prof. Syed Atif Rizwan’s Introduction to Islam: Faith, History, and Modernity or Community Or Abraham’s Children: Jews, Christians, and Muslims each allow students to prepare for the real-world diversity of hospitals, hospice centers, and other ministry settings, where chaplains are called to offer non-judgmental support across religious and cultural lines.

Pathways to Chaplaincy Certification

To become a certified chaplain, students must complete a minimum of 36 hours of theological studies and four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) through national organizations like the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) or a minimum of 48 credit hours for the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC). CTU’s rigorous theological degrees, coupled with elective flexibility and support for CPE requirements, make it a vital partner in preparing students for certification. Once you have graduated from CTU, we continue to walk with you through the process of obtaining a residency to complete the requirements for certification. Our field education and career services offices are ready to support you every step of the way.

Alumni Success and Strong Partnerships

CTU’s alumni have gone on to serve as chaplains in various settings, such as Loyola University in Chicago, Franciscan Health in Indiana, the Armed Forces, and Prison chaplaincy, demonstrating how CTU’s preparation translates into real-world impact. Through strategic partnerships and alumni stories, CTU highlights the meaningful contributions our graduates make in chaplaincy, offering current and prospective students a powerful network of resources and mentorship.
