I pray for Pope Leo XIV as he leads us closer to Christ. I know this will not be an easy task for Pope, and yet he has responded to the call of the Cardinals and the Holy Spirit. What a blessing to unexpectedly share a nationality with our Pope! Greetings from Richmond, California, in the Diocese of Oakland.

Please pray for healing for my children. One has a rare neurological disorder—she suffers beyond comprehension and our whole family has been exhausted, stressed, and afraid for her (and our) future. We are desperate for comfort and relief. My son fell and broke his collarbone today, and we ask for prayers for his healing as well. It’s been a devastating season of trials for us.

Holy Spirit, be like tongues of fire upon your servant, Pope Leo XIV, giving him courage and understanding, that his words may ignite your love within those who hear them.

Lady Wisdom, invite him in to your abundance, that he may trust that there will be enough for all and that what he offers will never go to waste.

Bring him your peace. May he know you are with him always. May he know there are always those who stand with him. Give him consolation of heart and spirit that him may speak from true hope and freedom.

A BLESSING FOR OUR NEW POPE

Gracious and loving God, source of all good and of all wisdom, we ask that you pour out an abundance of your Spirit today on your son, Leo, our new Pope.

Fill him with joy unexpected and make him laugh as your visitors did for Sarah behind her tent flap at Mamre.

Embolden him with courage in the midst of diversity and an unbending commitment to justice as you did our ancestors in faith—Deborah and Judith and Esther– who protected your people.

Help him discover life where others find only barrenness, as you did with your daughter, Hannah.

Vindicate his hopes as you did when Jesus, that glorious child of promise, came into the arms of Anna and Simeon in your temple.

Open his heart both to the joy of contemplation and to the generosity of service, as your Son did for Mary of Bethany and Martha her sister.

Console him with your loving presence in moments of loss or confusion, as Jesus did with his beloved Magdalene in the garden of resurrection.

Affirm his hospitality and graciousness, as did your apostle Paul in accepting Lydia and her household as his home in Philippi.

Strengthen him as a leader of your people, as you did for your Deacon Phoebe at Cenchreae, friend and mentor and co-worker of Paul.

Receive and bless and protect him, dearest Christ, as you did that anonymous woman in Bethany who, alone among your disciples, embraced you with precious fragrance and anointed you for your mission.

Christ, son of the living God, make him a vessel through which your life courses into our world, as the Spirit did for your mother, Mary of Nazareth.

Risen Christ, Wisdom Incarnate, who expounded the scriptures in Nazareth, who enflamed hearts with his words on the mountain in Galilee, who spoke with courage to the religious leaders in the Temple portico, who gathered his disciples in community, bless and abide with Leo today, bless his leadership, bless the faculty and students and staff of CTU, bless the world we are dedicated to serve.

Dear Pope Leo the 14th,

As an ELCA Lutheran I managed the Fortress bookstore at LSTC starting in August of 1982.

I know that you had graduated from Catholic Theological Union earlier in that same year. And I can only assume that you purchased books at some point in the basement of LSTC. You might even still gave some textbooks you used back then.

Know that I was so blessed to have worked with all of the professors of CTU back for over 5 years.

I was so thrilled when I heard of your election as Pope and personally knowing if your connection to CTU.

I am praying for your continuing ministry to the global world as well as all of your colleagues in Rome. Your words on the balcony after your election are resonating all around the globe and you continue to preach the good news of Jesus to all.

God of all people, In trust and gratitude, we turn to your Holy Spirit. We know your Spirit has been active during this time of conclave, guiding the prayerful discernment that has brought your Church to this important moment. Now, as Pope Leo XIV assumes the Petrine Ministry, we pray that your Spirit draw ever closer to our new Holy Father, illuminating his path so that he may faithfully see and respond to the needs of your people.

We pray that Pope Leo XIV be strengthened in his ministry. May he continue building bridges that connect us to one another. May he be an example of faith, hope and love. We pray that you give him joy in his work and a renewed fervor for your Gospel message. May he never lose sight of Christ who walks before us and among us — particularly in the most vulnerable, the forgotten and the outcast.

Let us pray with thanksgiving for Pope Leo XIV as he begins his Petrine ministry and for all our brothers and sisters in the Holy Roman Church as we seek unity and peace in the Church and the world. Let us also pray that he preach a gospel of love, inclusion, hustice, and peace, proclaiming Good News to the poor.

Almighty God, grant our Pope Leo XIV the strength to lead with wisdom and compassion. May he find courage in Your presence and be guided by Your divine light. Amen.

May God and His Blessed Mother watch over Pope Leo XIV and may his papacy bring blessings on our suffering world.

DEAR EXCELLENCY POPE XIV

I wish to congratulate His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on his election as the 267th Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, following the passing of his predecessor, Pope Francis, in April.
The first citizen of the United States to hold this sacred office, Pope Leo XIV has exemplified unwavering service and dedication to the Church and humanity at large, surely such qualities that render him deserving of this profound responsibility.
On this occasion, marking yet another historic transition for the Church, I extend my best wishes to Catholics all over the world and to the broader Christian community.

I sincerely hope that the new Pontiff will continue to strengthen the bonds of Christianity and universal values for all three World Monotheistic religions of champion compassion and justice, and tirelessly advocate for global peace above all in Palestine and Ukraine .

I am overwhelmed with joy, gratitude, emotion, and puzzlement, like Elizabeth during the Visitation of Mary, that my spiritual director for a brief time in 2014, is now Pope! I pray in Thanksgiving for your total gift of self to be the Vicar of Christ to the whole world. May Christ’s love continue to transform you as your heart rests in His. A Franciscan Prayer for the New Pope

You are the Holy One, Lord God Most High,
the one who works wonders.
You are the strong one, you are the great one,
you are the Most High and Glorious God.
By Your Spirit, You have given us a successor to Peter—
our brother, Pope Leo XIV.
Bless him, O Lord, and guard him tenderly
as he begins this sacred ministry.
Show Your face to him, and have mercy upon him
Lord turn Your gaze upon him and give him peace.
Steady his steps with swiftness and clarity,
that he may walk the pilgrim path with joy and resolve.

Let him guide Your Church securely and joyfully,
leading us along the way of prudent happiness.
May he offer his vow to You, Most High,
in the pursuit of that perfection
to which the Spirit of the Lord has called him.
As our pontiff may he embrace the poor and crucified Christ.
Let him gaze upon Jesus, our Brother and Lord—
to consider Him, to contemplate Him,
and to desire always to imitate Him.
