SUMMARY:Theologians of the Vatican II Era – CTU Fall Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Theologians of the Vatican II Era will give appreciative and critical attention to seven theologians who got in trouble for their writings before they became the figures who shaped the theological climate of the 21st century. \n  \nThomas F. O’Meara\, O.P.\, is emeritus professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame. He studied with Yves Congar\, O.P.\, Karl Rahner\, S.J.\, and Hans Küng—theologians who made critical and defining contributions to the Second Vatican Council. The lecture series will begin with three lectures given by Prof. O’Meara\, reflecting on his own recollections and on the legacies of those three mentors. \n  \n \nMary Kate Holman\, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Fairfield University and the author of Marie-Dominique Chenu: Catholic Theology for a Changing World. \n  \n  \nKathleen McManus\, OP\, Ph.D.\, Kathleen writes\, teaches\, and lectures in the areas of Christology\, Theological Anthropology\, and Feminist and Creation Theologies with special attention to suffering. She serves on the Editorial Team for the International T&T Clark series Studies in Edward Schillebeeckx. \n  \n  \nRobin Ryan\, C.P.\, is professor of systematic theology at Catholic Theological Union. Prof. Ryan studied under Elizabeth Johnson\, C.S.J.\, and will reflect on her contributions to our understanding of God and God’s relationship to the Church and the human family\, challenging and urging the Church to overcome “every type of discrimination\, whether social or cultural\, whether based on sex\, race\, color\, social condition\, language or religion.” \n  \nAntonio Sison\, C.P.P.S.\, is professor of systematic theology and culture\, as well as holder of the Vatican II Chair in Theology at Catholic Theological Union. Prof. Sison will address the work of Engelbert Mveng\, S.J.\, whose contextually rooted African theology reflected on the influence of European cultural dominance on the religious experiences of colonized peoples. Mveng’s theology of life was his imaginative response to the long legacy of colonization and the deprivation of culture in the lives of African believers. \n  \n

SUMMARY:28th annual Louis J. Luzbetak Lecture on Mission and Culture
DESCRIPTION:“Dark Spaces Birth New Stars: Hope in Dismal Times”\nThe Imiloa Astronomy Center on the Big Island of Hawai’i reveals that new stars are birthed from dark spaces in the galaxy. The native Hawaiian word imiloa means “exploration driven by a sense of wonder and imagination.” Contemplation of hope in dismal times reveals itself as such an exploration\, as hopeful actions of resistance and resilience illuminate the seeds of hope within us\, inspiring our collective movements for life in abundance for all. We can draw on our collective memories to activate our hope\, to remember that often hope emerges as an inner compass through tears of compassion and beauty. From the vastness of the galaxies to the tiny yet incredible journey and transformations of the monarch butterfly\, symbol of migration\, this lecture will explore historical collective memories of suffering and hope among marginal communities and intercultural solidarities. As con-sidere means “with the stars\,” to remember and reconsider means to rejoin the movement of heaven and life. Hope can embrace despair and one another. \nLecturer: Joanne (Járuko) Doi\, MM. \nMaryknoll Sister Joanne Doi served among the Aymara people in Peru for eleven years and is now deeply involved in pilgrimage journeys to former World War II Japanese American detention camps. A former CTU faculty member\, she continues to serve as an adjunct faculty member. She is currently part of a collaborative team in Monrovia\, California\, with Maryknoll E.A.R.T.H. Commons\, whose three-pronged mission focuses on healing the Earth\, healing relationships\, and welcoming the stranger.
