SUMMARY:Theologians of the Vatican II Era – CTU Fall Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Theologians of the Vatican II Era will give appreciative and critical attention to seven theologians who got in trouble for their writings before they became the figures who shaped the theological climate of the 21st century. \n  \nThomas F. O’Meara\, O.P.\, is emeritus professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame. He studied with Yves Congar\, O.P.\, Karl Rahner\, S.J.\, and Hans Küng—theologians who made critical and defining contributions to the Second Vatican Council. The lecture series will begin with three lectures given by Prof. O’Meara\, reflecting on his own recollections and on the legacies of those three mentors. \n  \n \nMary Kate Holman\, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Fairfield University and the author of Marie-Dominique Chenu: Catholic Theology for a Changing World. \n  \n  \nKathleen McManus\, OP\, Ph.D.\, Kathleen writes\, teaches\, and lectures in the areas of Christology\, Theological Anthropology\, and Feminist and Creation Theologies with special attention to suffering. She serves on the Editorial Team for the International T&T Clark series Studies in Edward Schillebeeckx. \n  \n  \nRobin Ryan\, C.P.\, is professor of systematic theology at Catholic Theological Union. Prof. Ryan studied under Elizabeth Johnson\, C.S.J.\, and will reflect on her contributions to our understanding of God and God’s relationship to the Church and the human family\, challenging and urging the Church to overcome “every type of discrimination\, whether social or cultural\, whether based on sex\, race\, color\, social condition\, language or religion.” \n  \nAntonio Sison\, C.P.P.S.\, is professor of systematic theology and culture\, as well as holder of the Vatican II Chair in Theology at Catholic Theological Union. Prof. Sison will address the work of Engelbert Mveng\, S.J.\, whose contextually rooted African theology reflected on the influence of European cultural dominance on the religious experiences of colonized peoples. Mveng’s theology of life was his imaginative response to the long legacy of colonization and the deprivation of culture in the lives of African believers. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Fall Shapiro Lecture - Ariela Housman
DESCRIPTION:For the Sanctity of the Torah Scroll: Imbuing Holiness through Intentional Action \nA Torah Scroll is the most sacred ritual object in Judaism. The halaḥah\, Jewish law\, regarding the creation of a Torah scroll and the reverence accorded to it thereafter\, is extensive. Starting with the selection of raw materials\, continuing through the processing of hides\, the brewing of ink\, and the actual writing of the scroll\, the entire process of making a Torah is one of consciously and deliberately vesting the object with holiness. Join Torah Scribe Ariela Housman to learn about the Jewish law\, the religious ethos\, and the art of making a Torah scroll. \n  \nAriela Housman (she/her/hers) has been a calligraphy enthusiast since 1995 and and a professional since 2003. In 2015 she began studying hilḥot safrut (Jewish scribal laws) with Jen Taylor Friedman\, the first woman documented to have scribed a Torah scroll. In 2021 Ariela accepted a commission from Temple Beth Shalom in Needham\, MA\, a Reform congregation\, to write a Torah for them. She completed the scroll in 2024\, the eighth woman documented to have done so. Since then she has been repairing scrolls written by other scribes. \nAriela writes in the Spanish Portuguese scribal hand\, one of only three scribes in the world currently doing so\, and the only one to have written a Torah in it\, at least so far. She looks forward to the swelling of those ranks. \nIn her other professional hat\, Ariela does art and calligraphy relating to works of speculative fiction and fandom. Her art has garnered three nominations for the Hugo Award.

DESCRIPTION:Anti-Islam and anti-Muslim bigotry in the United States have a long genealogy. Their resurgence in public discourse\, particularly amid domestic and international political developments\, reveals the continuing social and political permissibility of forms of anti-Islam and anti-Muslim rhetoric that might otherwise be recognized as unacceptable bigotry. This permissibility reflects deeper systemic questions about the place of Islam and Muslims in American society. SUMMARY:Faith\, Conscience\, and Care at the End of Life: Catholic\, Jewish\, and Muslim Perspectives in a Changing Illinois Landscape
DESCRIPTION:As Illinois enters a new era in end-of-life care\, profound questions about life\, death\, human dignity\, conscience\, suffering\, and medical responsibility are moving from the legislature into our hospitals\, faith communities\, and courts. Catholic Theological Union invites you to a timely interreligious and interdisciplinary conversation bringing Catholic\, Jewish\, and Muslim perspectives into dialogue with medicine\, law\, ethics\, and pastoral practice. In the spirit of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin’s consistent ethic of life and commitment to interreligious dialogue\, the panel will explore where these traditions converge\, where they differ\, and what they can contribute to the difficult decisions faced by patients\, families\, physicians\, and communities at the end of life. Against the backdrop of Illinois’s new End-of-Life Options law and the religious-liberty challenges now being brought in the courts\, this conversation asks a question deeper than any single piece of legislation: How do we honor human dignity and accompany one another faithfully at the end of life? \n  \nDr. Ranana Dine\, Assistant Professor of Catholic-Jewish Studies\, Crown-Ryan Chair in Jewish Studies\, and Director of the Catholic-Jewish Studies Program at CTU; \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nNicole Shirilla\, MD\, MA\, MEd is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Bioethics and in the Division of Palliative Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Shirilla received her BA and MEd from the University of Notre Dame. She earned her MD from University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She completed Family Medicine Residency and Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at The University of California Irvine. She earned a Certification in Health Care Ethics from the National Catholic Bioethics Center and completed a Clinical Bioethics Fellowship and MA in Bioethics at The Ohio State University. Dr. Shirilla is clinically active in both Palliative Medicine and Clinical Bioethics. She is the director for the OSU Clinical Bioethics Fellowship and is also active in graduate and undergraduate bioethics education. \n  \n  \nDr. Aasim I. Padela\, MD\, MSc\, FACEP\, Professor and Vice Chair for Research and Scholarship in the Department of Emergency Medicine and Director of the RAPID-EM Fellowship Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She also shares stories from her own life and the lives of Christians throughout history. Through these biblical and personal narratives\, Brink illuminates essential steps for crossing major thresholds: receiving an invitation\, choosing to go forward\, discovering a new vocation\, crossing boundaries\, weighing costs\, recognizing destinations\, seeking reconciliation\, and changing expectations. \nJoin members of the CTU community on November 18\, 2026 as we explore our experiences of transition and change through the lens of Radical Advent.
