Sundays at CTU: God’s Creation with Br. Guy Consolmagno, SJ

March 12, 2023 @ 3:00 PM CT - March 12, 2023 @ 6:00 PM CT

Br. Guy Consolmagno, SJ

Brother Guy Consolmagno is the director of the Vatican Observatory and president of the Vatican Observatory Foundation. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, he studied Earth and Planetary Sciences at MIT for his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and at the University of Arizona for his doctorate. During a break in his studies he spent two years teaching astronomy in Narobi for the Peace Corps. Having attended a Jesuit high school, Consolmagno contemplated joining the church at several points in his career before joining the order in 1989. Two years later, he was called to serve at the Vatican Observatory where he has been ever since. Consolmagno’s research has always focused on the smallest bodies in our solar system and his work at the Vatican has allowed him to make significant contributions to this field over the past several decades. In 2014, he was awarded the Carl Sagan
Medal by the American Astronomical Society for outstanding communication of planetary science to the public.

At the annual Dr. Barry Rankin Sunday at CTU on God’s Creation, CTU will feature a lecture by Br. Guy Consolmagno, SJ, Director of the Vatican Observatory.

Humanity’s robots have visited every planet in the solar system; humans have even walked on the Moon. And so far we have discovered thousands of planets around other stars. All those other planets, and all the stars they orbit, are part of the same universe created by God. They present a glorious opportunity for us to come to grips with what it means to be a creature… and to appreciate the words of the Psalmist: When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor.

About the Dr. Barry Rankin Sundays at CTU Lecture Series on God’s Creation

In 2019, the Dr. Barry Rankin Sundays at CTU Lecture Series on God’s Creation was established to explore themes of eco-theology, celebrating a “cosmos saturated with divinity.” The series memorializes the scholarship and contributions of the late Dr. Barry Rankin, a key organizer of Catholic Theological Union.
