Lay Scholarship Initiative
Scholarships for a New Generation of Lay Leaders
"Today, it would be difficult to imagine a diocese effectively carrying on its mission without the assistance of capable, generous and faith-filled laity. As lay persons become responsible for the care of others in the Church. their theological education and spiritual formation for ministry is of ever greater importance. I welcome any effort that helps the Church authentically transmit the faith of the Apostles to dedicated lay ministers and deepens their love for Christ."
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago
Building the Church of the Future
Catholic Theological Union has begun an initiative to increase scholarships for lay students.
This initiative was launched on All Saints’ Day 2009 when more than 200 guests gathered for "Witness to Hope" an afternoon of celebration of the lay vocation. A panel of current and former lay students, trustees, and Catholic Theological Union benefactors described how scholarship funds have made the CTU experience possible for themselves and others. Panel members discussed the evolution of lay ministries, what might influence the decision to donate to a CTU scholarship fund, and the challenge of financing an education that prepares students for a field which is modestly compensated. The event was followed by an All Saints’ Day liturgy and reception. A brochure was distributed that explained this new undertaking in detail. Please download your copy here.
