C. Vanessa White

Throughout her ministry and study, C. Vanessa White has had a passionate interest in spirituality and ministry formation. As a formation and retreat minister, catechist, lay missionary director, pastoral minister, and educator, she has been intent on journeying with those who are seeking a greater understanding of God's will in their lives. She has over twenty-five years of experience in ministry and spiritual formation with lay and religious communities.

A professed Secular Franciscan with the Sacred Heart Province, she is currently the chair of the USCCB commission on Accreditation and Certification, which accredits ministry formation programs and approves the standards for certification

She holds the office of Associate Convener for the Black Catholic Theological Symposium and has professional memberships in the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality, Catholic Theological Society of America, The American Academy of Religion, The National Consortium of Black Women in Ministry, The Ecumenical Association of Third World Theologians, and the National Association of Lay Ministry.  She is the chair of the board of directors of U. S. Catholic Bishop’s Commission on Certification and Accreditation, as well as a member of the board of trustees of Divine Word College, the Catechetical Advisory Board for St. Anthony Messenger Press, and the editorial board of The New Theology Review: a professional journal of ministry.  She is a member of the Fund for Theological Education’s Ministry Fellowship committee.

Her publications include the co-edited book Songs of the Heart and Meditations of the Soul – a book of prayers published by St. Anthony Messenger Press (with Cecilia Moore and Paul Marshall, SM) and Liturgy and Justice (contributing author –“Liturgy as Liberating Force) published by Liturgical Press.  She has articles in the National Religious Vocation Conference journal – Horizons, New Theology Review, and U.S. Catholic Magazine.  She was invited to contribute to the CNN series - Black in America.  Her essay on Black Catholics, “Authentically Black and Truly Catholic,” can be viewed on CNN.com.

She was recently appointed by his Eminence Cardinal Francis George to the newly formed Tolton Guild which promotes the cause of canonization of Fr. Augustus Tolton through educational and spiritual events and forums.

C. Vanessa White  is an experienced workshop presenter, retreat facilitator, spiritual director, and teacher who lectures nationally on Christian spirituality, discernment, women’s spirituality, diversity/intercultural dialogue, leadership development, spiritual and ministry formation, lay ministry and adult faith formation, leadership, spirituality and health, youth and young adult ministry, Black Presence in the Bible, as well as issues pertinent to the spiritual and pastoral life of African Americans.
